Aims
and Objectives
The Department offers applied journalism education to those who seek to work in themedia industry in Hong Kong as well as in Southeast Asia. TheDepartment was launched in 1971, and has become one of the majorJournalism and Public Relations & Advertising (PRA) teachingestablishments in Hong Kong. Students are trained to possess languageproficiency and learn the process and impact of communication in avariety of social contexts. In addition, students are educated to havea broad-based knowledge in Humanities and Social Sciences such asHistory, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Economics and Law inorder to cultivate their analytical ability with an open mind and beable to have a fair, impartial and independent view-point.
Inthe first two years students will receive training in foundationsubjects while in the third and fourth years they will delve moredeeply into the theory and practice of journalism and masscommunication in the age of digitization. For a rounded training, theyare exposed to news reporting and writing, news translation, radio andTV news production, new media platforms, editorial and commentarywriting and script writing and/or marketing, public relations andadvertising, so that they will be well prepared for their future
careers.
For practical experience, students are required to participate in activities organized by themselves such as
Our Voice ( 仁聞報 ), Our Voice Online, Shuo Online ( 說•在線 ), online audio and video platforms,
HKNews (香港新聞網),
Online Radio (網上電台), radio and television workshops and Shue Yan Newsletter etc.
TheDepartment also offers an extensive internship programme for allqualified students. Students will be provided with professionalinternship training in partial fulfilment of the degree programme atcommercial or educational television and radio stations, newspapers,magazines, advertising agencies, marketing and advertising departmentof various public and private corporations in order to enable them tohave hands-on experience in the industry.
Thefour-year honours degree programme in Journalism and Mass Communicationstarted in 2001 and the first batch of graduates appeared in summer2005. A total of 124 credit-hours with a minimum of 51 hours inJournalism/PRA are required for graduation. Twenty-five credit-hours ofthe 73 non-concentration hours must be in Chinese and English languagecourse work while the other 48 hours will be in Social Sciences, Arts,Economics and Commerce course work.

First Year Honours Degree Students:
For admission to the First Year of all departments, applicants are minimally required to:
(A)Have passed the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination with atleast six subjects, including Chinese and English in one examination;and
(B) Have passed both Use of English and Chinese
Language and Culture, and one additional Advanced Level subject in theHong Kong Advanced Level Examination, or
(C) Have attained equivalent education standards from overseas countries.
