Press Report on Examinations at HKSYU

Press Report on Examinations at HKSYU

Ever since Shue Yan started offering Honours degree programmes in 2001, the design of programmes has moved away from rote learning to developing students' critical thinking and analytical prowess. We have de-emphasized examinations and emphasized continuous assessment. Examinations are designed to assess students' ability to learn, assimilate and apply knowledge rather than to require regurgitation of facts.

In line with the practice of other universities, and with the support of our External Examiners, we have introduced examination components at senior level in many programmes that consist of an analysis of a specific case. The case would normally be released to all students in advance of the examination. The specific questions are, of course, not revealed. In a course such as Business Ethics, there is no one single answer that is correct. Students are required to use their judgment and develop their own arguments based on the theoretical concepts they have learned during the course. Students who have concerns about the conduct of a particular course are encouraged to discuss them with the lecturer concerned, or with the Head of Department or the Senior Registrar.

We emphatically refute the allegations of misconduct leveled against the university by some sections of the press on 4 May 2008.
