Tales is back at South China and loving it
With a height of 1.87 metres and weighing in at 84 kilograms, Tales Schutz is the streamlined striker most clubs would dearly like to lead their attack. But there is only one choice for him. “It is great to be back at South China, the club is my family.”
The fans never forgot the Brazilian front man who netted 24 goals in 30 appearances during Nam Hwa’s Treble Season, and neither did chairman Mr. Lo, who reportedly paid over a million dollars to bring him back to Hong Kong from Portugal. At a Press Conference on 22nd January, Tales said, “I am very happy to return to a club which has such confidence in me. My target is to help South China win everything available.”
As we sit in the Wanchai flat he shares with his partner Agnieszka, Tales is pleased to expand on his life in football, and love of Hong Kong. Sartorial and clean-cut, impeccably mannered and unaffected, he speaks with simplicity and sincerity. “I always wanted to play football. I was born in Porto Alegre in Brazil and even at 8 years old my mother would always find me outside in front of the house early in the morning kicking a ball!” he recalls. “I studied at High School but did not go to University. Maybe that will come later, but it was football that I wanted to study and to play.”
That led him on a global voyage, taking in Greece, Israel, Poland, Portugal and Hong Kong. So where is his favourite place? “Hong Kong” he laughs, “I love the club and the city…many people are speaking to me”. When prompted, he puts Poland next. “I met my girlfriend there. I was playing for Jagiellonia and living in a hotel. Her family offered to accommodate me and that really helped to make life enjoyable.”
His girlfriend is clearly important to him, and the date of their meeting, the 28th, is what led him to wear the number 28 shirt. That number is also auspicious in Chinese, 28 being the number of Chinese constellations (“Xiu”), and there is something about this dedicated young footballer that makes him something of a talisman for South China.
Most fans would agree that he rarely underperforms, his effort is wholehearted. But it is not just that. He relishes being part of a group, and that supercedes any desire to be selfish in the pursuit of goals. “It is the team that matters,” he explains, “I can play left or right, or behind the strikers, whatever is asked of me. I am here to help the group.”
That sense of collectivism probably sits well with the Chinese members of the squad, with whom Tales communicates easily. “The language of football is the same everywhere. Just a look can tell people what you are thinking.” His ability to anticipate play on the pitch is down to an innate sense of when the ball will come his way. Once it does, it is odds on that it will end up in the onion bag. “I live when I score a goal,” he exclaims, and so do the loyal South China fans, to whom he rushes after scoring.
Tales is one who is always looking ahead, but this is a rare chance to ask him about the famous 2006-2007 season. What was the highlight? “We were seven points behind Kitchee but made up the lost ground to win the championship.” And what were the best goals? “The two goals against Sun Hei,” he answers unhesitatingly. The memory comes back…. 5th May at Mongkok Stadium, in the FA Cup Quarter Finals. Arch rivals Sun Hei were leading 1-0 when Schutz pounced on a hesitant clearance by their full back to score the first from 14 metres. His second came midway through the second half. Collecting a cross from Lee Chi-ho from the right, he hooked the ball into the net despite close attention from Joao Miguel.
There was another goal earlier in the season against Sun Hei, and what a vital one it was! The club had not yet won a trophy and was drawing 1-1 in the Senior Shield Final at Hong Kong Stadium. With five minutes to go, South China was awarded a penalty kick. Icily composed, Tales slotted the ball into the right hand corner of the net, sending goalkeeper Domingos Chan the wrong way.
How does the team compare to last season? “We have four different players and we are stronger,” is his simple response. That bodes well for the vital three months ahead, with the League Championship, League Cup, FA Cup and AFC Cup all up for grabs.
But life is not all about football! In his spare time, Tales says he “visits Museums, Ocean Park, Disneyland, the cinema, and I play guitar.” But it is a brief respite. “When I wear the shirt of South China, it is always the best feeling.”
Tales Schutz is a man who likes to be happy. It is not surprising that the city of his birth, Porto Allegre, means “Joyous Port.” That joy transmits itself to the fans and all those at the club. Welcome back, Tales!
